Lightning could not put a halt to senior forward Katie Campion’s scoring streak as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s soccer team defeated Illinois State 1-0 in overtime Sunday at Engelmann Field.

After a 61- minute delay due to lightning spotted in the area, the game resumed and UWM took control and quickly ended the game in the extra frame. During regulation, the game was mostly back and forth and neither team had the advantage. In the first half, UWM had five shots and a balanced attack, but nothing led to a goal.

Illinois State gave UWM a scare in the second half. UWM was on defense much of the half and overpowered each Illinois State attack.

“Early on, they had a threat that worried me,” head coach Michael Moynihan said. “After that, our defense did a good job and did not concede much. Each team really had stretches where they controlled the game.”

Freshman goalkeeper Erin Kane returned to action after missing a game with an elbow injury and grabbed three saves and a shutout.

When regulation ended, the game headed into golden goal overtime, meaning the first team to score a goal would win it.

UWM made an efficient effort to end the game quickly. Keeping the ball in the Illinois State third of the field proved beneficial for UWM. Illinois State was unable to clear it to midfield.

From there, senior midfielder Kitty Montgomery sent the ball into the far corner where junior midfielder Stacey Faude sent a cross through the box. A quick flick pass by junior forward Elicia Scaife from the near post to the far post followed the cross. Finally, Campion volleyed the ball past the keeper to win the game. It was Campion’s second straight game-winning goal. On Friday, she scored UWM’s second goal in a 2-1 victory over Green Bay.

“That’s two in a row for Katie Campion. She is really starting to come around,” Moynihan said.
