Journal Sentinel partnership on hiatus

Program provided free newspapers for students

Free copies of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel are no longer available on campus, as the partnership between the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the newspaper is on hiatus.

Through the partnership, which began in September 2004, the Journal Sentinel acted as a sponsor of UWM athletics.

“The Journal Sentinel made a separate donation to fund the paper, but they were unable to do that this year,” said Thomas Luljak, vice chancellor of University Relations. After the donation, UWM paid 25 percent of the cover price for the paper.

University officials and the Journal Sentinel are eager to have students regain their free access to the newspaper.

“The papers were benefiting students,” said Hugh McGarry, Journal Sentinel senior vice president of circulation.

At least one student is disappointed about the Journal Sentinel’s absence.

“I’m very mad about it,” said sophomore Aubrey Davidson, who regularly picked up a copy of the paper at Sandburg Residence Hall. “One of the reasons I was so excited to come back to the dorms was that we got papers, and now we don’t.”

UWM and the Journal Sentinel are discussing a solution. McGarry recently met with UWM officials and suggested they seek another company to sponsor the paper.

“If there is a group who would like to be a sponsor, there could just be a sign above the rack saying ‘This paper is sponsored by so-and-so,’ ” McGarry said. “We’d love to have some sort of sponsorship.”

The university considered another way to pay for the newspapers.

“The other option is to see if we can find funding on-campus,” Luljak said. The Student Association is one group with which the university is discussing the possibility of sponsorship.

“We think this is such a good idea,” Luljak said. “There has to be a way we can do this for our students.”

University officials hope to reinstitute students’ free access to the Journal Sentinel this semester but Luljak said something should be in place for the second semester.
