With the parking situation on campus being less than ideal, the easiest way to get around the Milwaukee area is to leave your car at home and use the city bus system. Bus passes can be acquired in the Union during the first week of classes, providing a hassle-free and inexpensive way to travel around the city. Here is a guide to the routes that run through the campus area.
Route 15
The 15 bus stops along Oakland Avenue, and runs from the downtown area north through Whitefish Bay. This bus is the fastest way to get to Water Street and drops off close to the Pabst Theatre. The 15 also runs to Bayshore Mall, which is currently undergoing a massive renovation, and a Pick ‘n Save in Shorewood.
Route 21
Riding the bus to Mayfair Mall is quite a journey, but if you have some time on your hands, riding the 21 is the best way to get there. It takes about an hour to arrive at the mall so bring your iPod or a good book. The 21 picks up in front of the Union Monday through Friday and on the corner of North and Prospect avenues on weekends.
Route 30
The 30 bus picks up in front of Sandburg Hall and heads toward the downtown area. This route passes through the Brady Street area, which is full of restaurants and shops. Further down the line is Wisconsin Avenue, which cuts through the heart of downtown Milwaukee. The 30 is an easy way to get to the Bradley Center or U.S. Cellular Arena as they are located only a few blocks north of Wisconsin Avenue. For students going home on the weekends, Greyhound and Badger Bus locations are one block south of Wisconsin Avenue and James Lovell Street. Route 30 also runs by The Rave as a convenient way for concertgoers to get to their favorite shows.
Route 62
Wal-Mart is a frequent destination for most UWM students and the 62 bus will take you there. Picking up in front of Sandburg Hall, the 62 runs along Capitol Drive and will get you to Wal-Mart in about 10 minutes. Grocery stores such as Jewel-Osco and Aldi and fast-food restaurants like Culver’s, Popeye’s and McDonalds may be other destinations on the route.
Shuttles
Shuttle buses run on campus to and from the Capitol-Humboldt parking lot and pick up every 10 minutes during the school year. Pick-up points are in front of the library and Cunningham Hall on Hartford Avenue, in front of the Union and EMS building on Kenwood Avenue and outside of Mitchell Hall on Downer Avenue.
