I have faith this will be more than just another independent picture about a dysfunctional family.

Will this movie delve deeper? Or, is it just another “Squid and Whale,” “Pieces of April,” “Royal Tenenbaums” mash-up?

This could be a great movie about a little girl’s dream to become a pageant queen, and how her family adjusts to fit her desire. As long as the characters stay away from stereotypes, like the obsessed mother living through her child or the older brother hell-bent on destroying little Olive’s chances of winning.

What I expect is an exploration of what happens when a normal family enters the pageant world. How would they adjust to survive with all the spoiled brats and controlling parents?

The little girl who plays Olive, Abigail Breslin, seems like the perfect fit for the character. She’s cute enough to grab the audience’s attention, as long as they never find out she’s in yet another “Air Bud” movie.

Plus, who wouldn’t want to see a movie directed by the guy who directed Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” video?
