Winter is finally coming to an end, but what good is summer if you are stuck inside the mall in your boring retail job all day?
There are lots of jobs available to college students that do not involve trying to stay awake at a desk in an overly air-conditioned office or waiting tables. But you need to set one up now. Here is a few that promise an unforgettable summer working experience.
Job: Jefunira camp counselor
Where: Palo Alto, Calif.
Pay: $3,200 to $4,400 for the whole summer
When: June 19 – Aug. 12
Jefunira Camp, a day camp for 5- to 13-year-olds, seeks to entertain and motivate its campers with fun activities and a supportive environment. If you have experience with young children and are energetic, caring and creative, this is the job for you. Plus, you get a vacation to California out of it. Job: Summerfest grounds crew and landscapers
Where: Milwaukee
Pay: $7.25-plus per hour
When: festival season
The festivals are one of the best things about Milwaukee summers, so why not work where you’re likely to play? Summerfest has grounds crew and landscaping job openings. Job: Summerfest event support
Where: Milwaukee
Pay: $6.75-plus per hour
When: festival season
Event support includes jobs like amphitheater ushers, children's area attendants and workers in charge of access control in VIP areas, parking lots and gates. This gives you a good chance at meeting the bands and possibly other celebrities. Visit summerfest.com/aboutus/jobs.php to apply.
Job: Summerfest security
Where: Milwaukee
Pay: $8.50 to $10 per hour, depending on position, training and experience
When: festival season
Show people to respect your authority by keeping tabs on the unruly festival-goers. Interviews for security applicants will be held at the Summerfest Administrative Office, 200 N. Harbor Drive, on April 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. and May 20 from 9 a.m. to noon. Just show up if you’re interested; there’s no appointment necessary.
Job: Lifeguard
Where: Milwaukee County
Pay: $9.10 per hour, or more for returning lifeguards
When: Memorial Day – Labor Day
Get a tan all of your friends will envy and help keep swimmers safe at Milwaukee County beaches. The aquatics department will deck you out in your very own uniform, jacket and whistle for free, and the pay is decent. Apply soon so you don’t miss the required training program.
