I wandered into Jamo’s on a Sunday evening to meet a couple of girlfriends, but before I made it to the bar, I had to watch Jamo, the owner, putt into a little plastic hole.
After he missed, he said hello to me, and my sister and I “played through” and shimmied up to the bar. Jamo didn’t exactly get a hole in one that day, but with “Golden Tee” in the back room, someone was bound to get one in the hole.
Jamo’s is right down the street from some other favorite local bars. Thurman’s 15 is a block down on the other side of the street, and Hi Hat is at the end of the block at the intersection of Brady and Arlington. This is a terribly convenient location when the summer weather brings the life to Brady Street.
Serious conversations, laughter and booze flow freely at Jamo’s. Along with bar stools, there are booths lining the wall, and there couldn’t be more comfortable bar seating.
Don’t go to Jamo’s hoping to read a book or get any work done, though, as the lighting is optimal for dating, not working. With low lights and loud music, Jamo’s is the place where you feel you can lose all of your inhibitions, and to be honest, you probably will.
I once saw a girl crawl onto the bar and do a weird, kneeling (the ceiling isn’t high enough to stand) erotic dance. The best part was that everyone just kind of stared at her, confused and yet amused by the spectacle.
When the other patrons had gotten their fill, they all just went back to their cocktails and conversations as if nothing had happened. No one said a word when she lay across the bar, begging the bartender to play it again one more time, before she left.
Jamo’s is the type of place where you could bring anyone and they would feel welcome within 15 minutes. Between Caroline, George, Jimmy and Jamo, you are bound to find a bartender you can talk to.
When you get a chance, stop into Jamo’s, maybe you can challenge someone to a putting contest.
