Same-sex marriages amendment heads to ballot

The state Assembly voted 62-31 to approve the Republican-sponsored amendment that would bar same-sex marriages in Wisconsin, sending it to voters in a statewide referendum on the Nov. 7 ballot, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Those supporting the bill said it was important that voters, not the courts, decide how to define marriage in Wisconsin. Under the proposal, the Wisconsin Constitution would be amended to read:

“Only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state. A legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized in this state.”

Fifteen states have amended their state constitutions to define marriage, while another three have passed amendments to void same-sex marriages, according to the Human Rights Campaign, a national gay-rights advocacy group.
