I was a bit intimidated when I entered the dimly lit dining room filled with dark colors, but I did not leave disappointed. The entire staff at the Chancery on Downer Avenue seemed to be in incredibly chipper moods, and our server, Kimberly, was very attentive and equally as personable.
This was my first time going to any of the Chancery restaurants. Before I went I was told it was like Applebee’s, but not as good. I found this statement to be fairly inaccurate.
My friend Tom ordered the teriyaki chicken pita and I ordered the Cheesehead Dream burger. We also shared some of the Cheesehead mozzarella fingers.
The root beer on tap that I ordered just about made my night. It was in a huge glass, no ice, and topped with a cherry, seemingly just to remind me that I am not of legal age to drink alcohol.
The mozzarella fingers were pretty average, but they came with waffle fries as well. I was already getting full when our main courses arrived.
My Cheesehead Dream burger was overwhelming — overflowing with cheese, sour cream and roasted garlic mayonnaise. The teriyaki chicken pita was not as incredible as it may sound. Although bites that included vegetables were better, the pita, like the mozzarella sticks, was average.
I was impressed at the variety of food that is served. There were more than just burgers and typical pub fare. The variety of pastas, steaks, and sandwiches made my meal decision one of the hardest for me since I declared my major.
The prices were a nice treat as well. All the burgers, wraps and sandwiches were under $10. Excluding the steak selections, everything was under $15, and even the steaks were under $20.
I found the dark atmosphere in the Chancery to be somewhat relaxing and calming, especially when compared with the over-the-top decorations of similar bar-and-grill restaurants.
If you cannot handle being around a lot of spunky people who will not let their smiles fade and will jump at the opportunity to sing “Happy Birthday” to you, then this is not your kind of place. But if you like quality chain-restaurant food at a decent price, then I definitely recommend a visit to the Chancery.
The best part: all sandwiches and wraps come with a chocolate chip cookie!
