It was another successful indoor season for both the men’s and women’s track and field teams from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The season was so successful that they both took first place in the Horizon League Championships Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25 and 26.
Leading the way for the women was senior Tenia Fisher and junior Timeka Walker, who each won two events and helped the women solidify their first-place finish. The team score was 172. Taking second was Youngstown State University with a score of 151.
Fisher, a mid-distance specialist, won both the 400-meter and the 800 events. Her 400m time of 55.69 was a school and league record. She also contributed to the winning 400 relay team.
Walker won both the 60 and the 200, breaking her own school record in the 60 and the school and league record in the 200.
The men were also honored as league champions, their third consecutive and eighth in 10 years.
Picking up first place in two events was sophomore Darren Cole who grabbed victories in the high jump and triple jump events. His high jump clearance of 6 feet, 2¼ inches secured the victory for the event while his leap of 47 4¼ gave him the first in the triple jump event.
The relay team of Justin Gorman, Elliot Enright, Adam Swanson and Billy McCarthy was crowned champions in the 400 relay with a time of 3:19.85.
The men’s and women’s team’s success was assisted by great coaching from head coach Pete Corfield, who received the Coach of the Year honors.
Both teams return to action next weekend at the Alex Winston Invitational held in South Bend, Ind.
