The weather might be a little chilly as of late, but students looking to warm up can head to the Klotsche Center to watch the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s basketball team scorch their opponents.
The Panthers won their sixth straight game Feb. 16, vanquishing the visiting Detroit Titans 69-55. The Panthers have won an astounding 11 of their last 12 games, their only loss coming by just two points to Butler in late January.
The win puts the Panthers (16-8 overall, 11-2 Horizon League) tied for first place with in-state rival UW-Green Bay, both boasting an 11-2 mark in conference play.
Freshman Traci Edwards forged the way for the Panthers, leading the team with 15 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Dana Schultz got in the action too, scoring a career-high 11 points.
“Lately, I've felt so much confidence in our team down the stretch, whether it is UW-Green Bay, Loyola or the last team in the conference,” Schultz said. “We just have a confidence down the stretch and we just feel it.”
The Panthers dominated the glass, racking up 42 boards to the Titans’ 30.
Milwaukee also shot 47.7 percent from the field, but missed 10 free throws, going 24 for 34. The Titans shot just 37.5 percent and didn’t see much of the charity stripe, missing all three of their free throws.
The Panthers never conceded the lead again as junior Megan Rogers put the team in front 20-19 with 8 minutes 19 seconds left in the first half, sealing the Titans’ fate.
The Panthers led 33-28 coming out of the break and eventually pushed their lead to 13. The Titans hung tough, fighting back to within five, but to no avail, as the Panthers went ahead by 14 with just seconds left in the game.
All 16 Panthers on the roster saw some playing time, 11 of them contributing to the point total.
“I feel like I say it time and time again. We have different people stepping up for us every game,” said coach Sandy Botham. “We had some great minutes from players coming off the bench tonight.”
The Panthers second-to-last game of the season is Thursday, Feb. 23, as the team heads to Chicago to try and extinguish the Flames of UIC.
