MTV’s 24-hour college network, mtvU, announced its partnership with Drive-Thru Records to find America’s best college band or artist on Feb. 7.

The announcement for the third annual “Best Music on Campus Contest” invites college students nationwide to submit their original music at mtvU.com for a chance to win a record deal with Drive-Thru Records, as well as a music video premiere on mtvU and mtvU Über, at mtvU.com.

Last year, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee-based band Envy was named “Best Band on Campus” and received a $25,000 recording deal with Universal Records. The band renamed itself All Envy Aside and a music video for its single “Burning Again” debuted earlier this month.

Officials from mtvU said they hope to see more talent come from UWM.

Entrants this year can customize music pages on mtvU.com with songs, videos, photos, playlists and more. After the top 50 candidates are determined, voting opens to the public March 27. College students and new-music fans everywhere will be able to browse, listen to and rate their favorites.

The results of student voting will be “key” in determining who moves on to the next rounds and ultimately wins the 2006 mtvU “Best Music on Campus Contest,” officials said.

“College campuses are the breeding ground for incredible new music and with this contest, students will launch the career of the best new college band,” said Stephen Friedman, general manager of mtvU.

“The new mtvU online music hub brings added visibility to this year’s contest and will offer all BMOC artists even greater national exposure and opportunities to be discovered,” he said.
