Spring is creeping around the corner, and for those of us attending school in the frozen tundra, that means we can stop dressing for warmth and start dressing for fashion.

Soon it will be time to push the Ugg boots and fur-trimmed vests far back into the closet and embrace the new spring trends.

One of the most alluring trends for 2006 is black and white. Wearing black and white is classic. It will always be stylish, but this spring, black and white is made better than ever with the addition of accessories. All the bold colors you would not usually wear all over can be paired with a black-and-white outfit to make a statement.

Another classic trend that will be big this spring is the nautical look. The nautical color pallet focuses on classic navy blue and white. Stripes are a major component of this trend and look best on top with a solid navy or white bottom. Gold is the ultimate accessorizing color in this trend. Nautical pieces will often have gold and sea inspired embellishments.

As a modern twist, the safari style is a great option, too. The colors are very neutral: khaki, army green and occasionally black. The safari look mixes last spring’s bohemian trend with winter’s military theme. The best way to accessorize this look is with jewelry that is inspired by nature. Bracelets and necklaces made of wood are perfect, and you can even carry a tiger-striped bag to add a little flair.

The single hottest item to have in your wardrobe this spring is a great dress. There is a dress to mimic every possible trend. Choosing a dress with bold colors and geographic prints is a great way to really stand out. The best part about a dress is the fact that it is only one piece, so getting ready is ultra-fast.

For the cooler days on campus, wearing a classic jean jacket or a light sweater over a dress is a great option.

Another stylish choice is the trench coat. You can find a trench in almost any color and the styles vary. A trench coat will never go out of style, which makes it a must-have staple for any wardrobe. Trench coats are also great because they make you look fashion forward and put together.

As far as shoes go for spring, the wedge is back and bigger than ever. This season’s wedge has come a long way from the wedge of the past. There is a style for any occasion. Traditional soles made of cork are perfect for day, and bronze ones are hot for going out at night.

Whatever trend you select this season, have fun with what you are wearing, and do not be afraid to make a statement.
