UWM Post wins 5 newspaper awards

The UWM Post independent newspaper won five awards at the annual Wisconsin Newspaper Association convention Feb. 2 and 3, including two first-place finishes and a merit award for general excellence.

The awards (name, person, award, place):

  • “That is ‘so gay,’ ” Diego Costa, column writing, first place
  • Onopa Brewing Co., Jeff Jasinowski, advertisement, first place
  • UWM Post, general excellence, certificate of merit
  • “The pride of UWM,” Bradley Wooten, general reporting, certificate of merit
  • “It’s noodles in intelligent design battle,” Patrick Fitzgerald, feature writing, certificate of merit

The Leader, a student-run campus-affiliated newspaper, won a third-place award for its story “Coke bid disqualified for excessive prices; Pepsi signs contract through 2010” by Joe Ahlers for investigative reporting.

Business leader donates $10 million to business school

Milwaukee business leader and philanthropist Sheldon B. Lubar has donated $10 million to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Business Administration, the largest single gift in the university’s history.

The money will be used to fund new professorships and provide student scholarships.

In recognition of Lubar’s contribution, UWM is planning to rename the current School of Business Administration the Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business. The building would also be renamed in his honor.

Panel of media professionals to look at education in media

The UWM School of Education will host a discussion panel with local media professionals as part of its Education Strategy Series on Friday, Feb. 24.

The discussion, called “How the Media Portray Education: Perception/Reality?” features six panelists:

  • Alan Borsuk, MPS/education issues reporter, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
  • Robert Miranda, editor-in-chief, Spanish Journal
  • Mary Van de Kamp Nohl, senior editor, Milwaukee Magazine
  • Mark Sabljak, publisher, The Business Journal
  • Eric Von, host of “The Eric Von Show,” WMCS-1290 radio
  • Joanne Williams, education reporter and anchor, Fox 6 TV news

Sister Joel Read, Greater Milwaukee Committee education chair, will moderate the discussion.

The event will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the Union, Wisconsin Room. The cost, which includes a breakfast buffet, is $3 for students, $8 for faculty/staff and $10 for the general public. Reservations are due Friday, Feb. 17.

History colloquium to discuss voyages of discovery before Columbus

The UWM History Department will hold a colloquium on the Arabic sources for the pre-Columbian voyages of discovery on Friday, Feb. 17.

The colloquium, to be followed by a discussion, will be presented by professor emeritus Abbas Hamdani. Professor emeritus Clinton Edwards of the Department of Geography will preside over and moderate the colloquium.

The event will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Holton Hall, Room 341.
