In the pools of Western Illinois University, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming and diving team scored a 125-112 victory last Saturday, Jan. 28, in Macomb, Ill.
Leading the Panthers men was Jeremy Seibel, a sophomore who claimed first place in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. His 200 IM time of 2:02:74 was the best for a Panthers this season, and the fact that he only beat UWM freshman Robby Leibold by just over one-tenth of a second only adds to the dominance UWM had in the event.
“It was a team effort today,” head coach Dave Clark said. “Four different swimmers accounted for the five individual winners we had. A lot of supporting people got put in lead roles today.”
The Panthers received wins in two relay events, the 400 medley and the 400 freestyle. The 400 medley team of David Yugo, Chase Gravengood, Tyler Jefferson and Kyle Palmer swam magnificently, beating out Western Illinois' team by three seconds.
The 400 freestyle team of Seibel, Yugo, Jefferson and Ryan Frohmader won by an even greater margin, easily taking the victory by eight seconds.
“The relay teams really helped us get over the top,” Clark said. “We needed victories in every event we could get for us to win this meet.”
Gravengood also won in the individual 200 freestyle, putting in a time of 1:46:70. Teammate Ross Bittner swam the 100 butterfly in 55.99, enough for a first-place finish.
Diver Jeff Jasinowski won the three-meter board event, scoring a 323.60. That is his second best score in the event on the year. He also placed second in the one-meter board event.
Taking more than a week off, the Panthers will close out the regular season with a home meet against rival UW-Green Bay on Feb. 10 at the Klotsche Center.
