If you cross over the Illinois border, there’s only one way to have your hot dog: with mustard, relish, onions, a slice of pickle, tomato and sport peppers.

Sammy’s heaps on onions and radioactive green relish, which brings those flavors to the front of the condiments.

At Sammy’s, this Chicago Style Dog concoction is the menu’s staple. Sure, there’s other items, ranging from subs to a BLT Bomber to Philly Steak to Chicken Filet, but if you only go to Sammy’s once, get the Chicago Style Dog.

Just remember: don’t ask for ketchup.

And college students would be best served going on Sunday, when Sammy’s specials are 99 cents for Chicago, Chili, Cheese and Kraut dogs (normally, they’re $1.89).

Sammy’s does offer side dishes, too, including all sorts of fries: regular, cheese and chili cheese (sure, you can use the fork, but you don’t have to).

But two of its best sides are the onion rings and the mozzarella sticks, which includes some marinara sauce for dipping.

Perhaps the best item on the menu, however, is the root beer float. The float is made with Milwaukee’s own Sprecher root beer and combined with vanilla ice cream, giving the float a creamy, almost buttery flavor.

Sammy’s is excellent food to cure a hangover, welcoming the comfort of home and the idiosyncrasies of Chicago hot dogs. And those 99-cent dogs on Sundays surely would help that along.
