Junior Lindsay Caldwell of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s swimming team was nearly invincible at the Wheaton Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 3, and, to no one’s surprise, was honored by the Horizon League as the Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season.
Caldwell’s day in the pool was nothing short of perfect as she won three individual races and was a part of Milwaukee’s four winning relay teams. Along the way, Caldwell broke numerous school, meet and pool records, leading the Panthers to first place in the nine-team event.
Caldwell kicked off the day by winning the 50-meter freestyle in a time of 23.48 seconds, notching a pool and meet record. She then torpedoed to victory in an exhibition race, the 200 freestyle, in a time of 1:52.22, breaking UWM, pool and meet records.
Her final individual victories came when she won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:05.55 and the 100 freestyle in 50.67.
But Caldwell wasn’t finished there — she was just getting warmed up.
Racing the first leg of the 400 free relay, Caldwell finished in 50.58, setting the pace for a record-breaking team victory. The team finished in 3:29.97, again setting UWM, meet and pool records.
The team also set a meet and pool record in the 200 free relay, winning with a time of 1:37.22, with Caldwell finishing her lead-off leg in 23.54. She was also a member of the first-place 200 and 400 medley relay teams.
“Pretty much everything you could ask for happened,” Milwaukee head coach Dave Clark said. “It seemed like almost everything we did on the women's side was some sort of record.”
Caldwell’s Swimmer of the Week award is the fourth of her career and ninth for the team this season. This win marks the third time the Panthers have won the Wheaton Invitational, as they claimed victories in 1996 and 2003.
The women’s swimming and diving team will head to the sunshine state as they participate in the Time Trial 100s in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., on Jan. 4.
