For Grafton resident, wrestling can benefit

By R.C. Weich III

Grafton resident David Herro wanted to put on a wrestling show, but he wanted it to be for a good cause.

He chose to benefit the Variety Children’s Charity. Throughout the night, wrestlers signed autographs and raffles were held with proceeds going to the charity.

The show — the Blizzard Brawl — began with a 10-bell salute to wrestlers who have passed, including The Crusher, Big Bossman, Elizabeth, Curt Hennig, Hawk and Eddie Guerrero.

All fans love matches with stipulations. The first match was one of those — the loser had to wear a diaper. In the end, Angel Armani was forced to put on the oversized diaper and walk in front of the nearly 1,000 fans in attendance.

After an exciting tag-team match, fans were excited to see WWE announcer Jerry “the King” Lawler in action for a match scheduled against former WCW star Diamond Dallas Page (DDP).

However, Lawler did not show up in person, but a video explaining that he could not attend the event due to a personal matter was shown. He chose Buff Bagwell of WCW to take over his spot.

When the match was over, intermission began. Fans were allowed to step into the ring and meet the wrestlers, get their pictures taken and get autographs. This was very beneficial for the fans and for the charity.

After intermission was over, the male population of the crowd was excited to see Traci Brooks face Jess Dalton in a ladies match.

Another tag-team match that included Lawler’s son was very exciting and lengthy. In the end, the younger Lawler could not beat Longtime and Priest.

The main event featured former WWE star Al Snow taking on “The Skullkrusher” Rasche Brown in a title match for the Mid American Wrestling Championship. Brown was able to retain his title in an exciting match.

To end the night there was a 20-man battle royal.

Herro began when he owned a wrestling apparel and memorabilia shop. After that, he hosted a wrestling show on ESPN (1510 AM) and in 1996 he started putting on events.
