After finishing the month of November with a 10-2 record, the Milwaukee Admirals looked to continue their success in the first weekend of December, picking up a win and a close overtime loss.
In the first game the Admirals faced rival Chicago Wolves on Friday. The Admirals came out sluggish in the first period, putting only five shots on opposing goaltender Tuomas Tarkki.
Chicago forced 17 shots on Admirals goaltender Brian Finley. They managed only one goal out of those 17 shots, coming from Ramzi Abid on a power play.
Finally, when the first period ended, Milwaukee was able to calm down Chicago’s shooters and play much better defense. They held Chicago to one shot in the second period.
Not only were the Admirals able to step up on defense in the second period, they finally managed an offensive attack. Their attack was highlighted by 13 shots on goal.
Like Chicago, only one of Milwaukee’s many shots found the back of the net as Darren Haydar’s power-play goal with 2 minutes, 52 seconds left in the second period tied the score, 1-1.
In the third period, Milwaukee continued its offensive pressure adding 10 more shots. On another power-play early in the third, Haydar added another goal.
Milwaukee added another goal late in the third period to clinch the 3-1 victory in Chicago.
After their win at Chicago, Milwaukee traveled to Grand Rapids, Mich., to take on the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday, losing 5-4 in overtime.
The Admirals trailed early in the game after Grand Rapids scored the first goal at 11:18 in the first period.
Milwaukee answered with only 2:01 left in the period when Timofei Shishkanov tied the game 1-1.
In the second period, the Admirals found themselves in good shape. They led 3-1 until Grand Rapids scored their second goal five minutes later and their third with only 10 seconds remaining in the second.
Heading to the third period tied at 3-3, the Admirals fell behind late before they would tie the score at 4-4 with 10 seconds remaining, sending the game to sudden death overtime.
In the overtime period, the Griffons wasted only 4:40 before Jiri Hudler beat Finley for the win.
