Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated Valparaiso and South Dakota State University Sunday at the Klotsche Center.
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s squad defeated SDSU 132-92 and Valparaiso 141-78. They were lead by swimmer Chase Gravengood, who won two events and diver Jeff Jasinowski, who won both of his diving events.
“The team really did a lot of good things today,” UWM head coach Dave Clark said. “We were very good most of the day and some individuals really stepped up with some good performances for us.”
Gravengood finished first in both the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle events. He finished the 200 in 1 minute 45.49 seconds and the 100 in 48.14 seconds.
Gravengood was followed by his teammates in both events. In the 200, Robby Leibold finished third and David Adams took fourth. In the 100, Tyler Jefferson finished second behind Gravengood, followed by Jeremy Seibel and David Yugo respectively.
The women also performed well in the meet. Swimmer Lindsey Caldwell and diver Erin Blemberg both set school records.
Caldwell took first in the 200-yard freestyle and broke a school record with a time of 1:53.95. Right after her in third place was Jess Kelly. Behind her was Susan Hamsen in fourth and in fifth was Michal Hawker. Caldwell’s finish was impressive because it was the first time she had swam the event this year.
Blemberg meanwhile showed her dominance on the diving board in the three-meter event. She received a score of 315.68, surpassing the old school record of 299.77.
Other victories were recorded by Kristina Hansen in the 200-yard individual medley and Kristin Skiba in the 100-yard freestyle.
Both teams will head to the Ball State Invitational this weekend.
