Celebrating student organizations

SA gala to bring officers together

By Marie Seidl

The Univeristy of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Association will host its first Student Organization Gala on Wednesday, Dec. 7.

“The Student Association was brainstorming on a way to let students visibly see an SA presence while extending an arm for some of the most involved people on campus,” said Robert Stueber, senator and communications director.

Yet the SA failed to hold its scheduled meeting on Nov. 13 because it did not meet quorum, which is the lowest number of representatives needed for a governmental body to hold an official meeting.

Stueber said the Student Association is also using the gala in an effort to make the campus more pleasant by recognizing all the positive on-campus activities and organizations.

The black tie event is open to all student organization officers and will take place in the Union Wisconsin Room.

The initial hour of the gala will include hors d’oeuvres and time for student organization officers to mingle and get to know one another.

“There aren’t a lot of events that get everyone together,” said Executive Intern and Sen. Jori Carloss.

There will also be a dinner, followed by the focus of the event, which is an awards banquet.

Attendees are able to nominate themselves or others for the six awards to be given out. Student Association officials will hand out ballots at the gala and everyone will be able to vote for who they believe is deserving of a certain award.

Some of the awards are: recruitment, best event, student organization of the semester and best service.

There will also be an award for outstanding student leader. This honor will be given to a nominee who is very active in a certain organization or is involved and active in many different student organizations.

The final award will be a building block award. This will go to a brand-new student organization or a former student organization that has been “rejuvenated,” Carloss said.

Carloss said there are about 300 student organizations on campus, so the Student Association is hoping for a good turnout.

“I think it’s great” that there are so many organizations on campus, Carloss said.

To start an organization, at least four people must present themselves and their idea to the Student Association Senate in order to get a charter for their club.

Stueber said the entire gala is a chance for the Student Association to extend itself to some of the most involved people on campus.
