UWM responds to education rights campaign

By

A press conference was held today by UW-Milwaukee administrators following a meeting between UWM administrators and four students to discuss education rights concerns and last week’s protest.

UWM Chancellor Carlos Santiago said that UWM has agreed to form a panel to discuss financial concerns of college students, and that UWM supports an independent investigation of police action at the March 4 education rights protest. Santiago will be a part of the panel to discussion tuition and other costs of higher education.

Now I understand why the supposed representatives of the student body, SA, shows abuse of power. The Chancellor does not understand that he is the leader of the whole UWM. He is being challenged now, so he has agreed to a meeting. It is important to watch how he facilitates this meeting, because he has already demonstrated an attitude of self grandeur. He feels he does not have to speak to anyone but those who are the supposed leaders of the SA plus the leaders of the faculty and staff. He fails to recognize sometimes these people don’t speak for the whole, but speak for the individuals that have their similar ideology. This is not a meeting out of concern for the voices who obviously have issues. This is a meeting to save face.

Equally important, the Chancellor is supporting the Police action. As a certified Georgia Peace Standards Training Officer (Law Enforcement Officer), I question the training of the Law Enforcement Officers in Wisconsin. I saw nothing but an abuse of arrest power justified by the manipulation of Media footage. I question, if a real situation occurs at UWM will the Police be able to handle the situation?

Where did the Police set up their perimeter?

Did the Police torture those who they sprayed with Pepper spray, in their custody, not giving them the proper means (i.e water) to remove some of the Pepper Sprays affect?

I offer a few of my questions in this comment.
