Cookin’ up a fan base

By Marlyn Fink

Arthur King is thinking outside the box when it comes to the way college students consume their meals.

King, a sophomore at Gainesville State College in Georgia, recently starting posting videos on his YouTube channel, Cookin’ for College, in attempts to show students the ease of cooking real meals versus ordering takeout or relying on frozen pizzas.

“A lot of college students don’t realize how easy it is to cook,” King said. “It is definitely more rewarding than eating frozen food and it tastes much better.”

His mission has definitely caught on. Since starting the cooking videos less than a month ago, he’s already garnered over 1,000 fans on Facebook.

King uploads videos and recipes four to six times each week. Each mini-cooking show walks viewers through the process of making an affordable, simple meal, and includes the recipes to print and save for later. Homemade pizzas, taco chili and s’more-pancakes are just a few of the meals featured on his YouTube page.

“I pride myself in using affordable ingredients,” King said.

The idea of a cooking show all started after King made a delicious meal for his girlfriend, Kira Glasser, and the two joked about him starting his own show.

“At first we were kidding around, and then we got serious,” Glasser said. “Now we’re really trying to build a fan base.”

Glasser, who films the cooking tutorials, has been e-mailing The Oprah Show daily in hopes of getting King prominent recognition.

King’s interest in food stems from his father, who King said cooks constantly, and although currently undecided in his major, he envisions a future in food and is taking business and accounting courses.

“I’d love to have my own cooking show or restaurant,” King said.
