Hill: UWM looking out for parents

By

With the new Master Plan, UW-Milwaukee student-parents have been voicing concern over the proposed removal of the UWM Children’s Center on Kenwood Blvd.

The Kunkle Center currently provides daycare services to UWM parents with limited options due to academic constraints. Every day, a small fleet of vehicles can be seen piling up on Kenwood Blvd., with children being led inside by bustling parents.

According to Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Jim Hill, “The Children’s Center currently, in the Master Plan, is one of five projects that would be moving forward.”

The Kunkle Center is to be relocated for the construction of an interdisciplinary research building that will be built in its place.

However, the current Master Plan identifies the Children’s Center site as a “critically important asset” and notes that relocation of the building and its services “is an essential and urgent first move.”

The Master Plan identifies three different locations that are being considered for the relocation of the Children’s Center: the Alumni House site, the Columbia St. Mary’s parcel, and the site of the current Grounds Building on the Kenwood campus.

“There are no plans not to have a daycare center,” Hill said. “It’s just a matter of where it ends up being located.”

Key criteria that are being considered for the new location of the Children’s Center are “adequate pick-up and drop-off access, an adjacent outdoor play area and a footprint large enough to accommodate ground-level classrooms.”

When asked about the new location of the Children’s Center, Hill made it clear that planners are working to ensure that there was no interruption of daycare service for UWM parents.

“We are looking at several locations,” Hill said. “One, of course, is Columbia St. Mary’s. The other is over north of the pavilion. We’re looking to keep it on campus or very close to campus.”

While the new site hasn’t been finalized, Hill reiterated that regardless of where the site is located, directors are working to plan a smooth transition for UWM parents from the Kunkle Center to the new home of the Children’s Center.

“The directors of the plan are currently working to ensure that there is no interruption in daycare service,” Hill said. “When the research building starts, the Children’s Center will be located in its temporary or in its permanent location. But we are working to make sure that we don’t have any interruption in service.”

i like the idea that I heard about a voucher program that would let me choose a daycare closer to my house and less expensive and would give me a reimbursement each semester. Even without the reimbursement, other daycares are less expensive then the UWM Children’s Center. It’s a good idea to have a children’s center on campus, but ours is too expensive. I want to learn more about this voucher program.

It should go where the current grounds building is. That site is ideal for allowing for parents to pick up and drop off their kids with the driveway, and it has access to a lot of green space without requiring kids to cross any streets.

I like the idea that I heard about parents dropping their kids off at restaurant play areas while they take classes at UWM. Play areas are

less expensive than the Children’s Center and I heard somewhere that a UWM voucher program would actually pay for my kids’ meals for the 4 hours per day that they would be in the play area. There is a McDonalds close to my house, and so I want to learn more about how UWM will pay me to send my kids to McDonalds (even though that money is coming from my tuition that I paid the university).

Perhaps other centers are cheaper, but NONE are as good as this one, and I think students should work hard to defeat the voucher plan and keep their money ON campus going into a center that provides wonderful early childhood education AND employs a large number of students as well as hosts student teachers. This is essential for nursing Moms and the academic atmosphere cannot be beat. With the substantial discount available to students via use of segregated fees along with available financial aid, this center is well worth it. Do you really want your seg fees going OFF campus to low-quality childcare centers?
