RAK-athon 2008

By Marlyn Fink

Each year, the Center for Volunteerism and Student Leadership (CVSL) organizes an event in which students and faculty dedicate a Saturday morning helping elderly neighbors to winterize their homes and yards.

The annual RAK-athon, which stands for random acts of kindness, will be held this Saturday Nov. 8 from 9 a.m. until noon. RAK-athon is actually part of a nationwide organization called “Make a Difference Day,” that was created by USA Weekend Magazine.

“We feel this event is important because students are taking an active role in the community. They demonstrate leadership by setting aside work and their studies to be more involved,” said Jonathan Marks of the CVSL. “Ultimately, they’re representing the University and conveying a positive message to those outside of campus.”

Prior to registering in the Union, students are grouped together with a team of around 5 people and sent to a home to start working. According to Marks, most of the homes are located on the East Side or the South Side and transportation is available for those without cars. In addition, bagels will be available in the morning during registration.

The CVSL obtains home addresses and contacts from the Volunteer Center of Milwaukee, which come from Interfaith Older Adult Services.

“We are helping those who are already in contact with Interfaith because they are in need often they don’t have children and other family around to help them,” Marks explained.

Tasks generally consist of raking leaves, washing windows, installing storm windows and moving heavier objects such as air conditioners, among others.

Registration time is running out, so stop by the CVSL office before Saturday either individually or with a team and sign up. Their office is located on the street level of the Union. For more information on the event or to seek other volunteer opportunities, stop by the office.

“There are extrinsic reasons such as placing service on a resume or scholarship application, as well as meeting new people,” Marks said. “But there are many intrinsic purposes such as helping the community, representing the University, and practicing leadership.”
