Trial by fire

By Jimmy Lemke

Comedians play everywhere. The Comedy Store, Improv, with Second City or Saturday Night Live’s Not-Ready-for-Primetime Players. Comedians are always able to find ways to stand up and entertain the crowd. But off-Broadway?

As popular as comedian Mike Birbiglia has gotten in the past few years, especially with the college crowd, he really hasn’t strayed too far from his standup roots. His list of credits outside of standup begins and ends with an independent movie a few years back. Yet, Birbiglia now seems headed to the world of Shakespeare and Shaw. Luckily for the audience, his new one-man show, “Sleepwalk With Me,” sticks mainly to what he does best–comedy. Chock full of new material, SWM comes complete with stories of his first love, denial, and the sleeping disorder that nearly killed him, then coincidentally saved his life.

Birbiglia says his current tour, during which he is testing new material in theaters, on college campuses and at clubs across the country, contains about 80 minutes of new routines, with requests being taken intermittently for his old audience-favored bits. Birbiglia clocks in at over an hour and a half of the best solo comedy he can dish out, which is impressive as far as show length is concerned.

The tour has been a Springsteen-esque marathon. During Birbiglia’s first 15 days on tour he played 11 shows, all of them reaching well over an hour apiece. There was also no plush corporate jet involved.

“We tried to do it with the A-Team van. Joe (his brother) and I were driving the nights and waking up in different states,” Birbiglia said in a telephone interview last week with the Post.

A lack of rest is not the only problem the tour has faced. “When we were on our way up to Montreal, we had to go through the border to Canada. Well, in Canada, they don’t know about the A-Team, so of course we look suspicious trying to get through to Canada with this big black van. They kept us in customs for over two hours and we nearly missed the show,” he said.

Milwaukee fans will soon get their chance to catch a sneak preview of his one-man play when he comes to The Pabst Theater Oct. 3. According to Birbiglia, he’s pleased with how well the fans are taking the new material. “They’ve really responded to the ‘Sleepwalk’ stuff. I’m excited to get to Milwaukee to try it out,” he says.

So are we, Mike, so are we.

Show tickets are $26.50 for reserved seating.
