Maile Cornelius

By Nicole Arata

*Maile Cornelius, a 22-year-old sociology major at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, spoke to staff writer Nicole Arata about the idiosyncrasies of lesbian life in a straight man’s world.*

**Is it harder or easier to be a lesbian than a gay man?**

I think it is slightly easier because the media, TV shows and movies are more sympatric to lesbians than to gay men. The straight male fantasy is two girls together. However, that just shows how straight men dominate society. Lesbians are more acceptable just because of the male fantasy.

**What are some other challenges with being a lesbian?**

It is other people’s points of view and the stereotypes that they carry. If the only thing they know is that I am a lesbian, they don’t take the time to get to know me as a person. It is frustrating that whenever I talk to a straight girl, she just assumes that I’m hitting on her. Lesbians have types, too.

**How do lesbian relationships differ from other relationships?**

Most girls look for the emotional connection versus physical attraction so there are less one-night stands. Unfortunately, break-ups create more drama than gay or straight relationships combined. We tend to hold on to the feelings longer.

**How does the lesbian scene work in Milwaukee?**

Coming from a small town it is refreshing to find a gay/lesbian scene at all. Knowing that the city is bigger there are more opportunities. The best place to meet is at bars like the Pint or Out ‘n About.

**How do bi girls and straight girls looking for a same-sex experience make you feel?**

It is frustrating not knowing a person’s sexuality. It creates a lot more problems in relationships but I understand not being able to decide or being attracted to both sexes. You can feel mislead and in the end, we (lesbians) are the ones that usually get hurt.

**Do you feel equality will happen with the gay marriage ban issue threatening it?**

Equality may never be reached. There will always be people who disagree and the definition of what is normal is different for everyone. Marriage should be for everyone. I didn’t dream about one day having a civil union. I want a wedding. I think being about to get married is one step closer to equality.
